BRIDGE THE GLOBAL MENTAL HEALTH GAP

When it comes to investment, mental health trails far behind other fields of health care. This opens a world of opportunity for passionate people to create sustainable strategies, address the treatment gap and lead the charge for mental well-being.

Our Online Global Mental Health PgDip is designed to produce graduates who can take charge of mental health service provision at a global level. It is the only 100% online Global Mental Health postgraduate programme available anywhere in the world. 

The programme emphasises the important role that social and cultural factors play in how mental health difficulties can be understood and treated across the globe.

By studying the Global Mental Health PgDip, youll be exposed to leading research, cutting-edge topics and first-hand insights from our renowned Institute of Health & Wellbeing. The global burden of mental health difficulties and improving access to mental health globally are just a couple of the topics explored.

To understand the challenges faced by low-income countries, we collaborate with various institutions, including the University of Rwanda, to help fuel the programmes international outlook. Together, were committed to preventing disease, improving health and well-being, and reducing inequalities locally, nationally and globally. 

The core teaching is based around lectures. Through discussion and debate with a diverse, global community of students, focusing on relevant research literature and policy documents, youll be just as immersed in the content as if you were studying in a physical classroom. Youll gain the confidence to grow your career by advising, guiding or researching mental health policy, helping you make a real difference to the world. 

Contributors to the Global Mental Health programme come from a diverse range of disciplines including clinical psychology, social work, anthropology, sociology, law and psychiatry. Teaching is also delivered by people who have been affected by mental health difficulties.

Focusing on the impact which social and cultural factors have on the awareness and treatment of mental health service provision, this programme matches goals set by the United Nations and those identified by the Grand Challenges in Global Mental Health which were published in the world-leading science journal Nature (2011).

Graduates of our Global Mental Health programme establish careers in national mental health policy and planning, epidemiological and mental health services research, as well as advisory and advocacy roles in governments, international agencies and non-governmental organisations.

Courses

You will take two 10 credit and two 20 credit courses in your first year, followed by three 20 credit courses in your second year. 

The core teaching across all courses is based around lectures. There is also a strong emphasis on discussion and debate with your fellow students, focusing on relevant research literature and policy documents.  

Assignments have been based on graduate attributes which are unique to the University. These help students to learn the soft skills associated with professions and are designed to allow them to obtain their career goals. Assignments include podcasts, posters and presentations.

  • MED5272Research Methods (Qualitative, Quantitative and Health Economics)20 Credits

    Gain an overview of research methods including qualitative, quantitative and health-economic approaches. This course will help you to critically appraise research methodologies employed in peer-reviewed research papers.

  • MED5445Cultural, Social and Biological Determinants of Mental Health20 Credits

    Find out how the manifestation of mental health difficulties can vary across time and cultures. Critically discuss attempts to identify biological mechanisms underlying mental health difficulties and the interplay that these mechanisms might have with social factors.

  • MED5447Improving Access to Mental Health Care in the Global Context20 Credits

    Highlighting the scale of the treatment gap for mental health difficulties in low and middle-income countries, this course will also explore ways of making culturally appropriate, evidence-based treatments available to large numbers of individuals in a cost-effective and sustainable way.

  • MED5448Introduction to Mental Health and Disability10 Credits

    Gain an overview of how various forms of mental health difficulties and disability are described and classified in high-income countries such as the UK and USA. There will be an introduction to diagnostic systems (such as DSM-IV and ICD-10), which will allow future courses to explore how valid and reliable these systems are for low and middle-income countries.

  • MED5449Mental Health Promotion across the Life-span20 Credits

    This course will explore ways in which mental health difficulties can manifest across the life-span. You will critically discuss ways in which awareness can be heightened and interventions adapted to promote mental health in particular age groups (e.g. mothers and babies, adolescents and older adults).

  • MED5450Mental Health and Disability: International Law and Policy20 Credits

    Learn how mental health and disability legislation varies between high-income and low to middle-income countries. You will also critically discuss how international law influences mental health and disability policies across different settings.

  • MED5452The Global Burden of Mental Health Difficulties10 Credits

    An overview of how the global burden of mental health difficulties is measured and how this relates to the burden caused by other forms of illness. The course will critically discuss international differences in the burden caused by mental disease and how this corresponds with differences in available resources.

Admissions Requirements

To be accepted to this programme, you must have:

  1. You must have at least a 2:1 Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject (e.g. psychology, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, law, public health or public policy)
  2. A registered health care professional qualification will also be acceptable
  3. A background in a mental health field is desirable but not essential (e.g. study, work or volunteer activities)
  4. International students: applicants must have an IELTS score of 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band (listening, reading, writing, speaking) or an equivalent English language qualification (e.g. TOEFL iBT, CAE, CPE, PTE Academic or Trinity College London Integrated Skills in English)
