HOW GENETICS IS REVOLUTIONISING THE DETECTION AND TREATMENT OF CANCER

Cancer Research UK estimates that 1 in 2 people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime. It is a disease that impacts most peoples lives at some stage. So understanding cancer, and the development of new treatments, is of intrinsic interest to us all.

You will examine three key questions about cancer diagnosis and treatment:

  • Where have we come from?
  • Where are we now?
  • Where are we going?

Study the biological basis of cancer, influences of causation, how it is detected and treated, and the development of new strategies. Gain insight into patient experiences, discuss key issues relating to this topic and also undertake your own internet-based investigation into one of the developing areas of Epigenetics.

COURSE OUTCOMES

On successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic cell biology as it relates to the development of cancer
  • Identify current approaches used to identify and treat cancer
  • Discuss factors contributing to the development of cancer including environmental and genetic aspects
  • Reflect on strategies which may be used in future cancer therapies
