During the first year, there are three compulsory courses. Then, in the second year, students will choose two courses from each of the three blocks. These courses are 10 credits each, so overall worth 60 credits.
Throughout each course you will be assessed in a variety of ways which could include essays, discussions, blogs, online presentations, interactive quizzes, assignments or group work. Details of these assignments are found in your induction.

You will learn about various forms of assessment and will be able to select those most appropriate to measure acquisition or application of knowledge, skills and/or attitudes relevant to a health professions context. You will also learn about governance issues in relation to assessment, including standard-setting, grading and quality assurance measures.
You will identify and critique various theories of learning, and apply these theories to the design of learning in a health professions context. You’ll also identify and apply ways to enhance learning for yourself and for your students.
Explore various teaching methods and examine the evidence base for their effectiveness. You will critique the appropriateness of these methods for facilitating the acquisition and application of knowledge, skills and attitudes required by health professionals. You’ll also design novel teaching activities to implement in your professional context, while evaluating your own teaching practice to identify areas for enhancement.
Identify, critique and apply various approaches to, and models for, designing a health professions curriculum. Additionally, you will identify the various stakeholders in a health professions curriculum and critically evaluate their impact.
Find out how to design an education research project. Focus on the research topic and questions, appropriate methodologies and methods to address them. Discover appropriate methods of data analysis.
Explore the theory and practice of course and curriculum evaluation, and how this impacts on the design, delivery and governance of courses and curricula.
You will learn about different perspectives on the nature of knowledge and evidence. Then you will apply your new understanding to critique the evidence base for approaches to, and activities for, learning, teaching and assessment.
This course covers the theory and practice of leadership in health professions education, while reflecting on how this applies in your professional context.
You will learn about key issues in the management of a health professions curriculum and how these are impacted by factors such as institutional policies. You will be encouraged to reflect on your personal and professional practice in relation to policy and governance.
Learn to identify and critique ways in which simulation may be used in the delivery of health professions education, in contexts of high and low resource. This will include the use of simulation in formative and summative assessment of clinical and communication skills.
Explore in greater detail the teaching and assessment of clinical skills. You will also learn about relevant issues in, and mechanisms for, governance.
Learn about the governance and ethical conduct of education research. In addition, you will find out about the process of applying for ethical approval of education research.
To be accepted to this programme, you must have:
A medical, dental, or nursing degree from an institution recognised by the University Court; or a recognised degree from another appropriate health profession; ideally be employed in a relevant professional context.
Applications will also be considered from individuals with other relevant degree qualifications (such as a BSc in a biomedical science), who are, or aspire to be, employed in the education of health professionals.
