With a vision of creating the next generation of leaders in molecular pathology, this programme provides state-of-the-art training to help you acquire the essential knowledge and skills to make a difference in this dynamic field. 

This programme has been developed to facilitate the pathologists, clinical scientists, trainees (and those in related health professions) to acquire essential knowledge, skills and attributes required to help shape to the future of molecular pathology 

We are one of the few centres where molecular pathology and diagnostic histopathology are amalgamated on one site, permitting the delivery of a clinically relevant blended molecular pathology programme. 

Key focus areas are diagnostic molecular pathology, clinical trials and translational research in molecular pathology, pathology bioinformatics and digital pathology. Youll be trained from the purpose-built Laboratory Medicine Building at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, which provides services to 52% of the Scottish population. This is one of the largest NHS departments of pathology in Europe, accommodating around 50 consultant pathologists. 

The PgDip is led by the national leaders directly engaged in key initiatives in molecular pathology, so you will be kept up to date with information and the current needs identified by professional societies, research councils and charity organisations. 

This blended learning programme offers maximum flexibility, making it ideal if you wish to study molecular pathology while on clinical duties and pathology training. Moodle-based learning sessions will allow you to study within your own schedule. In-person review sessions allow active interactions with course contributors and other students. Case-based and hands-on sessions facilitate the knowledge and skills acquired in clinical diagnosis as the programme proceeds, so you will stay motivated throughout the whole programme.

The programme consists of three compulsory courses worth 60 credits in total. Then you have the opportunity to choose up to six advanced courses to make up a further 60 credits. These courses are a mix of online and face-to-face courses.

    Provides an introduction to medical statistics, covering a number of the most commonly used basic analyses from both clinical and laboratory studies. The aim of this online course is to ensure that you can appraise the literature that includes the methods covered, and use these methods to analyse datasets.

    Designed to facilitate the acquisition of essential and fundamental knowledge in molecular biology and genetics by pathologists, pathology trainees who are undertaking histopathology training under the Royal College of Pathologists Curriculum for Specialty Training in Histopathology, and those in relevant health professions.

    Facilitates the acquisition of knowledge of the currently available molecular tests and theories behind molecular biological techniques, by pathologists, pathology trainees who are undertaking histopathology training under the Royal College of Pathologists Curriculum for Specialty Training in Histopathology, and those in relevant health professions.

  • MED5459Multidisciplinary Approaches to Molecular Pathology20 Credits

    Covers the multidisciplinary processes that encompass appropriate selection of molecular tests according to clinicopathological circumstances, data analysis and interpretation, and generation of an effective report. The most essential and clinically relevant examples, primarily in cancer, will be discussed on disease-by-disease and/or test-by-test bases.

  • BIOL5197Omic Technologies for Biomedical Sciences: From Genomics to Metabolomics20 Credits

    An introduction to workflows for the resolution and characterisation of complex mixtures of biomolecules, from DNA to small molecule metabolites. The course will emphasise the potential and challenges of omic approaches and will include data-handling tasks and demonstration.

  • BIOL5201Designing a Research Project: Biomedical Research Methodology20 Credits

    This course will introduce you to concepts and practices of scientific research methodology. During the course, you’ll utilise the theoretical knowledge gained to critically review and synthesise the published literature, prepare a literature review, and plan your research.

  • MED5023Health Economics for Health Technology Assessment (Online)20 Credits

    This online course will deliver the fundamentals of health economics and the practical elements of economic evaluation that are integral to health technology assessment. You will become familiar with the application of economic theory to health and health care issues, the principles of health economics and the techniques of economic appraisal.

  • MED5332Disease Screening in Populations10 Credits

    This course will cover the rationale for, and requirements of, population screening programmes to detect individuals at high risk of particular conditions who can then be offered diagnostic investigations. You will work in a group to investigate and report on a screening programme of your choice from any country.

  • MED5372Statistical Methods for Health Technology Assessment and Evidence Based Medicine (Online)20 Credits

    This online course will deliver the fundamentals of statistical methodology that underpin health technology assessment and evidence-based medicine.

  • MED5391Leadership in Health Professions Education (Online)10 Credits

    In this course, you’ll learn about the theory and practice of leadership in health professions education and reflect on how this applies in your professional context. You will develop your knowledge and understanding of leadership in the context of health professions education during this online course.

  • MED5393Managing the Health Professions Curriculum (Online)10 Credits

    In this online course, you’ll learn about key issues in the management of a health professions curriculum and how these are impacted by factors such as institutional policies. You will be encouraged to reflect on your personal and professional practice in relation to policy and governance.

  • MED5398Governance and Ethics in Education Research (Online)10 Credits

    In this online course, you will learn about the governance and ethical conduct of education research. In addition, you’ll learn about the process of applying for ethical approval in the field of education research.

  • MED5408Medical and Research Ethics10 Credits

    Provides you with a critical understanding of ethics in research and clinical practice. It will also provide you with knowledge of good clinical and scientific practice, and ethical governance issues related to research and clinical practice.

  • MED5477Introduction to Statistical Methods (Online)20 Credits

    This course assumes no prior knowledge of statistics. The online course covers graphical and numerical methods of displaying and summarising data along with the use and interpretation of confidence intervals, significance tests (t-tests, chi-square tests, etc.), correlation and linear regression. You’ll gain hands-on experience of using appropriate statistical software to carry out these analyses.

  • MED5488Biomarkers for Precision Medicine (Blended)20 Credits

    During this online course, you will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to initiate and complete biomarker studies, to ensure that the right research questions are asked, that they are answered using appropriate methods and quality assurances and to take control of the use of patients’ diagnostic and trial tissues.

  • MED5489Drug Discovery and Clinical Trials for Molecular Pathology (Blended)20 Credits

    This online course is designed to facilitate the acquisition of minimum essential knowledge required to confidently participate in clinical trials, as well as to foster future-proof leadership in improvement of trial strategies that maximise the likelihood of the patient’s response.

Admissions Requirements

To be accepted to this programme, you must have:

  1. The programme is open to both trainee and consultant-level applicants
  2. Applicants should normally possess a medical, dental, or nursing degree from an institution recognised by the University Court; or a recognised degree from another appropriate health profession
  3. Applicants should ideally be employed in a relevant professional context
