This conversion programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and is designed to provide you with a broad, critical awareness of psychological theory and practice. You will be provided with opportunities which allow you to focus on aspects of psychology with particular relevance to your own experience and interests.
Upon graduating from our programme, you can apply for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) of the BPS. With a GBC, you can then go on to further study in a specialist area and become a chartered psychologist.

This MSc can function as both a feeder for a PhD and as an industry-focused qualification.
On successful completion of the Masters you will be able to apply for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with the British Psychological Society. This will allow you to go on to further study in specialised areas of psychology.
Graduates of this programme are well placed for careers in clinical and health psychology, educational psychology and teaching. The skills you gain are also readily transferable to other industries.
You will take eight core and two optional courses, followed by a research project/dissertation. You will also be allocated an academic supervisor to advise you on your individual research project.

The purpose of this course is to introduce you to key theories and experiments in cognitive psychology with a focus on the areas of language, memory, thinking and problem solving.
This course explores development and its diversity across the lifespan including childhood, adolescence and ageing. You’ll learn about social and emotional development, cognitive development and their necessary interactions, and the impact of factors such as culture and context on these varied developments.
Key topics include the field of ‘individual differences’ in ability, personality, emotion and cognition, including coverage of key concepts and theories in intelligence and the biological bases of personality.
This course covers the recent history of psychology, focusing on the main schools of thought, key historical figures and events. There’s also a focus on important conceptual issues relevant to psychological research, linking present-day research with the underlying historical debates.
You’ll acquire a broad-based understanding of classic and contemporary theory and research in physiological psychology. Topics include the development of the nervous system; the biological basis of human and non-human animal behaviour, typical and atypical neuropsychology; evolutionary theories of behaviour; the roles of hormones and genetics in behaviour; the reward system and its relation to decision making; critical evaluation of cognitive neuroimaging techniques.
You will gain a critical understanding of research principles in psychological qualitative and quantitative research. You will complete a series of psychological research studies to gain practical experience of a range of research paradigms, data analysis techniques and principles in open science centred on questionnaire-based and qualitative methodologies. To achieve the course objectives, you will compose a research methods portfolio and write one independent qualitative report.
Gain experience of performing a research project. As part of the project, you will carry out an extensive piece of empirical research, requiring you to demonstrate a range of research skills including planning, consideration of necessary ethical issues, analysis and dissemination of findings.
Build on the knowledge and skills gained in Research Methods 1 to gain critical understanding of research principles in psychological observational and experimental research. You’ll complete a series of psychological research studies to gain practical experience of a range of research paradigms. You will advance your use and understanding of statistics, data analysis and principles in open science. To achieve the course objectives, you will compose a research methods portfolio and write one independent quantitative report.
The aims of this course are to provide a broad-based critical understanding of classic and contemporary psychological theory and research in social psychology, which will cover key research in social thinking, influence, and inter-group behaviour.
Introducing the range of epistemological and practical issues underpinning the successful and rigorous use of qualitative methods. This course will explore the theoretical and practical aspects of different qualitative approaches in terms of data collection methods and process of analysis. It reviews the emerging field of internet-mediated research and highlights opportunities for conducting secondary qualitative research.
Critically exploring the field of clinical health psychology. You will discover an evidence base of theory and research in order to understand how the practice (theory, methods and interventions) of clinical health psychology can reduce distress and enhance the psychological and physical well-being of individuals. You will also learn how the findings from the psychological study of health and well-being can be disseminated to wider audiences through health promotion campaigns and public engagement opportunities.
This course is designed to provide you with a theoretical and philosophical background, knowledge of historical and contemporary concepts and processes in counselling psychology. You’ll be encouraged to critically evaluate the major counselling models (e.g. person-centred approach, cognitive behavioural therapy).
You’ll gain an understanding of the abilities of children whose development is in some way different from the norm. You will examine the origins and identification of different forms of atypical development and investigate the psychological and social impact for children.
This course links psychological theory with application in an exploration of a range of important and current topic areas. Explore the latest and most significant developments in psychological theory and application. You’ll be encouraged to critically evaluate psychological theory in the context of important applications in a range of scientific and clinical content areas.
During this course, you’ll investigate and evaluate areas where psychology has been influential in understanding criminal behaviour (e.g. personality, mental health).
Exploring and investigating how psychological theories underpin educational practice, i.e. teaching, learning and assessment. Discussions will cover the experiences of typical pupils and those with learning and behavioural difficulties. This course will also consider how educational psychology is understood and practiced in the UK.
