It is all about linking ideas, research and policies from multiple sectors to achieve better health outcomes.

Our online One Health MSc programme seeks to explore an integrative approach to human, veterinary and ecological health, recognising the importance of interdisciplinary collaborations and the interconnectedness of public health, environmental issues, veterinary and human medicine.
Throughout the programme, we also raise awareness of cultural and societal factors that influence how One Health approaches are translated into practice.

One Health research at the University of Glasgow is vibrant and includes projects that aim to improve surveillance of anthrax in Africa, that work towards the elimination of rabies in Tanzania and that investigate Lyme disease on Uist. On successful completion this programme, you will be able to:
- Recognise and discuss the interdisciplinary nature of the One Health framework.
- Appraise the interdependence of human, veterinary, public and ecological health.
- Demonstrate a critical awareness of current issues and priorities in the field of One Health.
- Explain emerging disease dynamics and discuss the management of emerging disease threats.
- Critically discuss the integrated interventions required to improve access to healthcare.

- Explain the causation, pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnosis, management, and control of relevant infectious diseases within a One Health framework.
- Appraise epidemiological approaches used to understand the health of animal and human populations.

- Critically engage with forms of analysis, evaluation and synthesis to issues relevant to One Health.
- Critically review, consolidate and extend knowledge, skills practices and thinking in One Health.
The One Health programme is designed for medical and veterinary professionals interested in furthering careers in science, and graduates in other related disciplines intending to work in a One Health framework.
The courses modular structure gives you the flexibility to choose a line of study to suit your interests or career goals, covering a number of science and health-related fields.
Fuelled by the latest research-led knowledge, this programme is perfect for busy professionals looking to diversify or expand into careers where understanding the bigger picture is key.
Career prospects for graduates of the One Health programme are broad.
For example, graduates would be qualified to pursue an academic career (PhD) in One Health and associated subjects such as zoonotic diseases, public health, antimicrobial resistance, and health economics, or they may be employed by:
- International health organisations (such as the WHO, FAO, OIE)
- Local agencies
- Government agencies (such as DFID or public health sector)
- Non-governmental organisations
Other career paths include working for bio-technology and pharmaceutical companies or scientific journals.
This programme has 60 credits of core courses and 60 credits of optional courses plus a 60 credit dissertation.
The first year of study will explore and examine the value of the One Health framework, explore major techniques to measure health of populations and introduce zoonotic diseases, one of the core subjects of One Health.
During the second year, you will be able to choose courses in an area of special interest.
The third year will allow you to gain in-depth knowledge in your area of special interest through a research project.
Throughout each course you will be assessed in a variety of ways which could include essays, discussions, blogs, online presentations, interactive quizzes, assignments or group work. Details of these assignments are found in your induction.
The duration of this programme is 2.5 years - 6 years taken on a part-time basis.

Explore the major techniques used to measure the health of populations, while considering how poor study design can cause misleading results. The course aims to make you competent at interpreting and critically appraising epidemiological literature and provides a basis for more advanced study of the topic.
Introducing the core concepts of One Health. You will find out about key issues in One Health using relevant examples from current research in this area. A major focus will be the interdisciplinary nature of One Health and how disciplines collaborate to contribute to an in-depth understanding of disease dynamics and how emerging disease threats can be addressed.
You’ll complete a substantive piece of independent work involving an analysis of data and/or literature.
Designed to provide you with knowledge and understanding of the existence of microbiological, parasitic and other hazards of importance in veterinary public health. You will also learn about the properties of these hazards.
Develop analytical tools for ecology, including the measurement of biodiversity, assessment of ecosystem health, and concepts of ecosystem health. You’ll gain a firm foundation in terminology and methods of quantification for field exercises later in the programme.
Address the One Health paradigm and introduce the concepts of veterinary public health. These include food safety, notifiable diseases, risk assessment, regulation of slaughter and processing of livestock and game, international trade in animal products and the delivery of veterinary services.
You will examine the management of wildlife and livestock including domestication, the concept of production animals, animal husbandry, wildlife management in zoos and wildlife reserves. This course also covers the essential elements of resource allocation and competition, land-use business models, land tenure systems and human–wildlife conflict.
Introduce yourself to the concept of integrated infectious disease control. The focus is on a multidisciplinary practical approach to the control of zoonotic infectious diseases. You’ll learn about relevant pathogens and the diseases they cause. You’ll also study host–pathogen relationships along with interventions for treatment, control and prevention. The course will also cover surveillance, development of interventions and evaluation of intervention strategies.
Critically review the biological and sociological impact of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), including its impact on human health, animal production and the environment. Examine the molecular mechanisms of AMR and explore how AMR has evolved and spread, and how it can be challenged.
Gain an introduction to the major issues in food security and how they relate to human health and nutrition, animal health, and the livestock sector and its environmental impact. You’ll acquire a broad knowledge of the principles underpinning global food security and apply policy and innovative research to explore how to alleviate the issues.
Delivering the fundamentals of health economics and the practical elements of economic evaluation that are integral to health technology assessment. You will become familiar with the application of economic theory to health and health care issues, the principles of health economics and the techniques of economic appraisal.
Provides an analysis of globalisation and its impact on public health by examining the major health-related themes within the globalisation debate. Several major global health challenges and their overall impact on the global burden of disease will be studied.
Covering the meaning of Public Health and the factors that influence health in different settings. This course will also introduce you to specific public health practice and related challenges.
An introduction to the principles and processes involved in designing and conducting research studies in health sciences using systematic reviews, qualitative, quantitative and health economics approaches. The course will prepare you to complete an in-depth research project.

At least a 2:1 Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject (i.e. Biosciences, Medicine, Veterinary, Public Health, Environmental Sciences, Social Sciences, Economics) from a recognised institution.
